Baby weaning or weaning the baby off breast feed depends upon certain factors like the child’s immunity, managing the mother’s milk production and the emotional impact of the child. At least until 4 to 6 months the baby should be exclusively breast fed for his or her health, provided the mother has enough milk supply. Weaning could be started at the 6th month after taking into account the child’s growth and development. If the child is likely to pick up allergy, asthma or eczema, she or he should be breast fed for a longer time. Stopping breast feeding all of a sudden could make the baby emotionally upset. This may also invite trouble to the mother as the breast would get filled with milk, the non-utilization of which causes engorged breast and infected milk. This would lead to severe discomfort for the mother. So weaning should be slow and gradual.
